Alan has been Head of School at Stoneridge since 2005. He brings a deep-rooted commitment to fostering schools which are humane, creative, and effective learning environments for children, their families, and their teachers.
At Stoneridge, Alan has led the school through its first accreditation process, and the school is now accredited by both AISNE and the American Montessori Society. Alan brings a strong background in curriculum to his work, and the result has been the strengthening of the school’s academic programs at all levels and the creation of the Learning Skills Program to enable Stoneridge to meet the needs of the full range of children.
Alan has spent his entire career as an educator. He was an elementary school teacher for five years in public schools; he taught undergraduates and graduate students; and he has been a principal and head of school at four different independent schools.
Alan is a recognized expert in the application of technology to teaching and learning. Before coming to Stoneridge, Alan had a fifteen-year career as Principal Scientist and Center Director at TERC (Cambridge, MA), where he led R&D projects. He is the senior author of Network Science: A Decade Later (Erlbaum, 2000), and many journal articles. His writing focuses on the use of technology to support exemplary teaching and learning practices. As part of this work, Alan led courses and intensive workshops in many different states and countries; this work was funded by the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Dept. of Education, IBM, and various foundations.
